Pete (Predatory Mite)
Pete is a predatory mite (Phytoseiulus persimilis) which has been used for many years as a natural way to control various mites (especially two-spotted mites) in gardens and commercial crops. Both juvenile and adult Petes feast on troublesome mites. Adults are fast moving and a distinctive orange colour. Juveniles are paler.
Supplied as 1,000 adults, juveniles and eggs. Not for WA.
Pete is sent via Express Post and is usually received in approximately 7 days. Dispatch is planned to minimise transit time with Australia Post.
- Two-spotted mite, red spider mite (Tetranychus urticae)
- Bean spider mite (Tetranychus ludeni)
- Bamboo mite (Schizotetranychus celarias)
Pete should be ordered at the first sign of mite damage before their numbers explode. Do not order Pete if systemic pesticides have been used within 4-6 weeks as most are harmful to beneficial insects. If mite numbers are already high spray with eco-oil or eco-neem first to reduce populations before ordering Pete. These sprays are safe for Pete as is the rest of the eco-organic garden range.
Pete comes mixed in with vermiculite and is often difficult to see as adults are less than 1mm long. You should release Pete as soon as he arrives unless there is severe storm weather.
Gently rotate the mixture and then sprinkle a teaspoon full at the base of each infested plant. For taller plants you can also sprinkle the mixture directly onto foliage where pests are congregating. Do not place in direct hot sunlight and avoid overhead watering for the rest of the day.
Evenly distribute around the garden and place the empty container at the base of a plant to allow any residual Petes to climb out.
Pete takes 3-6 weeks to fully establish in a garden. A follow up order can be done after 3 weeks if pest populations are still high.
